Are you being seen?

Unraveling

Are you being seen? Are you seeing others? These are questions you may never have stopped to ask yourself before, just assuming the answer is a given. But what do these really mean and why do we need to be seen or see others?

I strongly believe that when we put aside the personas we carry and truly see one another we are able connect to each other, and therefore unite and connect to humanity. When we are seen it means we have been able to break down our barriers and reveal our hidden truths to the world. When we see others, we are able to understand and relate to them more, expanding our horizons, our compassion, empathy and mindfulness.

We all long to be seen – to be known and for another being to look into our eyes and say, ‘I see you’. We long for them to discover the parts of us that nobody else pays attention to or the parts we try to hide.

We also long to see others – to embrace and connect to those around us on a deeper level. To truly see someone takes more than just looking. It is seeing the person behind the eyes and beyond the external surface details. It is seeing all parts of them and what more they can become. It Is acknowledging their hopes and fears. It is hearing the other beyond their words. It is feeling and seeing human emotions and vulnerability beyond actions and attitudes.

To truly see someone or ourselves takes intent. Where our intention goes, attention flows. But dedicating our attention is intimate and we have to want it, to open up to being seen.

To truly see and to be seen,
We need to be vulnerable.
We need to take our shields down.
We need to let go.
We need to reveal and unmask who we are.
We need to show our true selves – flaws and all.
We need to see and feel others with all our hearts.
We need to be willing and ready to accept that others are doing the same.

Once we break down these barriers and unravel ourselves for the world to see, we start to see others in a new light. We relate to other people and their journeys and start to realize that we are all the same. We’re not alone in our doubts, fears, joys, worries. We’re all together as a human race – a collective of individuals all battling the same issues and experiencing the same situations, no matter who we are or where we come from.

When we truly see each other, the humanity we hold comes to light. We connect. We heal. We feel a deeper sense of belonging. When we start to drop our masks as a collective, we start to unite and grow stronger together. Imagine a world where everyone accepted, understood and related to one another – wouldn’t that be a beautiful thing?

Let’s be courageous and start our journey to seeing and being seen. Let’s take the time to pause and really look within ourselves to see everything that’s beneath the surface. Let’s spend time understanding how to see others and what we can learn from them when we do.  Only then can we start to live life on a deeper, more fulfilling and purposeful level.

Are you willing to try?
