Let’s not use the excuse of “I am only Human”

Human

Exploring parts of what makes us, us is extremely eye-opening and empowering – especially when we do so as a collective. I put the topic ‘human’ out there on my social media to explore with you all, and it was exciting to read what it stirred up.

I asked, ‘what does “I’m only human” mean to you?’ The answers you gave me created such a poetic definition.

“I make mistakes, but I am still learning. And I am allowed to have a bad day and have emotions running high. I shouldn’t be hard on myself, on wanting to be a superhero in everything. I have no shame in admitting I am not perfect. Coz I have feelings. So, please, be gentle, and meet me with compassion and love.”

It was so beautiful to see humanity through your eyes.

This question also stirred up a debate – that this phrase can be used as a crutch in life. And yes, I totally agree, especially if we are using it to let ourselves off the hook. ‘I’m only human’ gives us a sort of excuse to not reach our goals, surpass our expectations or face new challenges. It limits us, sitting on our shoulder to remind us that not living to the max or fulfilling our purpose is okay.

Yes, we are human. Yes, we are flawed. Yes, we ALL make mistakes. But let’s not use the excuse of “I am only human” to not take charge of our lives.

But what happens if we take out the “only” and start using ‘I am Human’ instead. Isn’t that more empowering?

We then acknowledge we are beyond our imperfections – we are not defined by them. We must see them, listen to them, learn from them and accept them in order to really grow. This shifts our mindset to achieve greater things – to look at the positives and look for possibilities. To take the opportunity to make different choices. It sets the tone that we can be and do better.

Accepting that we are all human also builds upon our connections with those around us. When we feel annoyed or upset by something someone has done, remembering that they’re human helps us remember that just like us, they also will be battling their own imperfections, inner critics and self-doubt. Through our differences and uniqueness we are all the same – we are all human.

Let’s take responsibility for our limitations, actions, decisions, and impact. Instead of leaning on the ‘I’m only human’ fallback, let’s use the fact we’re human to accept and understand ourselves better. Let’s empower ourselves instead of allowing ourselves to live by excuses that are only there to limit us. Be courageous to stand up and face your vulnerabilities in order to learn and move past them.

The next time you feel your inner critics or limiting beliefs start to ride the ‘I’m only human’ wave, step back and realise that the only way you will be limited is if you let that thought enter your space. We are all human and all able to reach new heights. Are you ready to reach yours?
